Having a fresh and pristine breath is quite convenient and wonderful. Unfortunately, this is a tough thing to have when you align your teeth with braces. Oftentimes, food particles, plaque, and bacteria get trapped in your appliance and around your teeth, promoting bad breath. However, this doesn’t have to be the case for you. There are things you can do to achieve the fresh breath you desire, and our orthodontist, Dr. Scott Vincent, is happy to tell you all about them.

The first thing you need to do is clean your smile even more than you did before you had braces. This means you need to brush and floss after you eat. If you can’t floss that often, try to floss at least once a day. After you brush, scrub your tongue with your toothbrush. You can also rinse your mouth with mouthwash to improve your breath even more.

The second thing you should do is visit our office every six months for your regular dental cleaning appointments. During your visit, our dental team will deeply clean your teeth and braces with special techniques and tools. This can help you remove the odorous substances that are stubborn and it can help you prevent gingivitis, which is the first stage of a dental disease that partners with persistent bad breath.
