TMJ disorder is a blanket term associated with discomfort or pain in the temporomandibular joints. These two joints are complex and they include a small cartilaginous that allows the joints to slip while working in tandem with a multitude of muscles and ligaments. If you’ve been diagnosed with TMJ disorder, your Vincent Team Orthodontics orthodontist will often employ a treatment strategy that starts with simple lifestyle modifications.

Some modifications needed often include eating softer foods, applying ice packs to the area, and performing some basic jaw-stretching exercises. It might also include taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications. With consistency, you should see a significant improvement in your symptoms within a few weeks.

If the symptoms persist, then our Vincent Team Orthodontics orthodontist will likely employ more advanced treatment strategies. This might involve taking prescription anti-inflammatory medication, wearing a night guard when you sleep, or the using prescription muscle relaxers.

If these things still do not provide relief from your TMJ disorder symptoms, our orthodontist will discuss more invasive treatment methods with you. This might include things like the use of a stabilization splint, or surgical intervention.
